A few issues ago we launched this “Focus On Light” Section which was met with such positive feedback, I decided to make it an ongoing feature. I also decided to continue my dialogue with one of the lighting industries leading professionals, and someone I deem to have great insight ... Stefanie Neal (Branch Manager, Norburn Lighting on Hastings in Burnaby). Once again Stefanie showed me around and explained the different styles of lighting and their applications. I forgot how huge their showroom is, they have so many different styles of beautiful fixtures, some I consider to be pieces of art.

I asked Stefanie what trends she sees coming out of the lighting industry these days. She replied "Much like fashion, lighting design evolves and changes over the years. However, as much as trends move forward, this season’s fixtures display characteristics of the past. This ability to pair different eras opens us up to mixing finishes, from mirror finishes of all kinds to gold and brass tones and vintage bronzes. We are in a period that allows such variety in design, rules are no longer rules but more guidelines that are looking to be broken, opening us up to mixing finishes, from mirror, gold, brass and vintage bronze. It allows the designer to be unique in their pairings. Mid-century modern seems to be one of our most popular styles. It seems to be such an appealing style with its simple, functional, focus on use of materials, clean and airiness. There is a practical side to this design that is complementary to the needs of the clients. Do not be afraid to mix those finishes and embark on a journey of creativity: What is Old, Is New Again!”

So, once again, off I went to my car to grab the camera and tri-pod ...
